2012 and Beyond ...

Continuation of a journey

Golden Triangle Loop

February 23, 2012 - I always wanted to roll around the north of Thailand via the back roads. There are a number of motorcycle rental places in Chiang Mai and I decided to rent a Honda Africa Twin to carry us around. More on that mistake later.

Fang and Wat Thaton were the targets for day 1. Fang is a wide dusty spot in the road with at least a decent hotel (Khun Yuw Place hotel N19.91532 E99.21052), for the rest your only entertainment are the local markets and the ubiquitous 7-11's which seem to grow like weeds in Thailand.

Wat Thaton, on the other hand, was a whole different matter. It's by far the most elaborately appointed Wat I have ever visited to date.

Not only is it grand in terms of the building and the grounds, but the inside is absolutely stunning. Aside from the life-like wax statues of long-dead former monks, the double-domed inside, with the gently sloping circular walkway to the top is spectacular. The pictures don't do it justice, but here you go.

One of these two dudes looks like my friend Ross with bad glasses...

Good photo opportunities were all over the place. Here are two from the main floor.

The real prize of this Wat is the circular "stairway to heaven".

We went back to Fang and I stayed up to process pictures. In doing so, I realized the Adobe DNG converter had a flaw so I lost most of my good pictures for the day.
